This research review was commissioned by the ODA. Its terms of reference were to review the international literature in the area of multi-grade teaching, giving special attention to material from developing countries; to provide an annotated bibliography; and to indicate areas for future research.
Several persons have assisted the research. John Lowe prepared the annotated bibliography and identified and summarised materials for use in the general review. Sheila Aikman prepared the section on the experience of multi-grade teaching in Peru's indigenous schools, reported in chapter 2. Vicky Brudal translated materials from Swedish. Diana Guthrie of the Institute of Education's library provided useful advice on tracking the widely dispersed literature on multi-grade teaching. I am grateful to all for their assistance, but bear the responsibility for the views expressed in the work alone.
