The need for more ecological research, particularly in LGB's area of origin, to determine alternative hosts for LGB was expressed. The erratic and sporadic nature of LGB infestation at the farm level was again stressed.
Although it was acknowledged that both biological and chemical controls were useful it was urged that more work be concentrated on determining how the two could best be used together.
The possibility of LGB being more in the nature of a migratory pest of stored maize was considered. It was suggested that if this hypothesis were shown to be true then the chances of T. nigrescens and P. truncatus reaching an equilibrium during the finite period of a maize storage season would be considerably lower than would occur between populations of the two species in the wider natural environment.
